Managing Partner, Toronto
Matt co-founded and has been a Managing Partner of Green Acre Capital since inception. He spent the eight years prior to this managing venture capital backed companies. These roles involved a heavy focus on operations, business development, financings, and M&A transactions. He currently sits on the boards of Weekend Holdings, Ample Organics, and Humble + Fume, and previously sat on the board of Tokyo Smoke up until it merged with DOJA. He graduated early with honours from the University of Western Ontario, receiving an HBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business.
Managing Partner, Calgary
Tyler co-founded and has been a Managing Partner of Green Acre Capital since inception. Prior to this, he gained 18 years of investment banking and capital markets experience. Approximately 10 years of that was spent on the institutional sales desk of FirstEnergy Capital with a focus on private equity clientele and financings. Additionally, he spent three years in the investment banking group of an energy boutique dealer and two years at CIBC Wood Gundy in private client advisory. He graduated with honors from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance.
Venture Associate, Toronto
Colin Ball serves as Green Acre Capital's lead associate. Colin is a recent graduate from the Richard Ivey School of Business at Western University. His interests and studies eventually led him to pursuing opportunities to invest in emerging markets and industries. Colin is experienced in venture analysis having seen and evaluated thousands of cannabis opportunities since GAC’s inception.
Our Advisory Board
Each of our Funds has an Advisory Board in place to provide input and counsel to the team. Members include seasoned entrepreneurs and executives with experience in capital markets, the cannabis industry and other sectors.
Shawn is a managing director at York Plains Investment Corp. He has been active in the Canadian cannabis sector for several years, as an early stage investor in Aphria and as an advisor to CanvasRx, the largest medical cannabis patient outreach service in Canada (which was recently acquired). He has more than a decade of experience in the energy industry, including cofounding National Home Services (NHS) and serving as its Chief Operating Officer from 2008 to 2011. During that time, NHS grew to more than $300M in contracted revenue with more than 100,000 customers. He graduated from York University and holds an MBA from Harvard Business School.
Lorne is a seasoned entrepreneur with extensive experience working with start-ups, going public transactions, fashion, retail, architecture, real estate, finance, and cannabis. He is the co-founder and former chairman of PharmaCan Capital Corporation as well as a co-founder of Tokyo Smoke. Lorne is currently the chairman of HG2 Capital Corp., an investment, merchant bank in the cannabis sector. Additionally, he sits on the boards of Hempco Food and Fiber Co., Emblem Corp., and the Design Exchange. Lorne is a graduate of the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture at the University of Toronto, and has the ICD.D designation from the Rotman School of Management.
Albert Soberano is Chairman of Sharno Group Inc., a privately-owned independent principal investment group and family office. Albert is an accomplished entrepreneur, investor and corporate executive with extensive experience in the areas of retail and manufacturing, real estate ownership and development, and corporate sales, marketing and promotions. Previously, Albert was the CEO of Y.M. Inc. (previously, Young Manufacturers), one of North America’s largest privately-owned apparel retailers, and led various high-profile M&A transactions in this role. Albert has extensive corporate governance experience and is an active philanthropist.
W. Brett Wilson
W. Brett Wilson co-founded FirstEnergy Capital Corp. (Canada’s leading energy investment bank). He has since gone on to be the Chairman of Canoe Financial and has also developed extensive holdings within his private merchant bank in the energy, real estate, agriculture, sports and entertainment industries. He is best known for being a “fan-favourite” on CBC’s hit reality TV show Dragons’ Den where he established himself as the all time lead deal-making “dragon.” His business and philanthropic leadership have brought him much recognition as he was awarded the Order of Canada in 2011.
